CORE CONCEPTS IN PSYCHODYNAMIC PSYCHOTHERAPY (CCPP) |
DESCRIPTION “Psychoanalytic therapy is a shared, collaborative endeavor between two human beings, neither of whom has privileged access to truth” with a goal “to expand freedom and choice by helping people to become more mindful of their experience in the here and now.” (Jonathan Shedler) Mental health professionals of all disciplines are welcome. Intended for those who are beginning clinical psychotherapy practice or those with limited exposure to psychodynamic theory, this course provides a contemporary introduction to core concepts in psychodynamic theory and psychotherapy practice. The course is centered in the understanding that a strong alliance, the therapist-patient relationship, is the foundation of effective therapy. Together, we will introduce and study concepts such as: What is a psychodynamic psychotherapist?
To enrich and deepen our understanding, we will also look at clinical examples. Faculty will share clinical vignettes, and students will be welcome to bring in their clinical experiences. We will think together about the mind in context of the cultural factors that influence identity. Race, ethnicity, sexuality, and other structures of power embedded in society (and psychoanalytic writings) will be explored. The class will be asked to hold these ideas with sensitivity, openness, and flexibility. The course will be taught by experienced clinicians, pulling materials from articles, book chapters, podcasts, videos, and therapy sessions as the basis for class discussion. Students will have the opportunity to apply and discuss the concepts introduced in class with each other. LOGISTICS
Applications will be accepted in Fall 2024 for a January 2025 start date. For more information about the course, please contact admin@newwsp.org. |
