CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF RACE, ETHNICITY, AND CULTURE (CSREC)

MISSION STATEMENT

HISTORY OF FOUNDING

The Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity, and Culture at the Washington School of Psychiatry was established in 2015 to study the many embedded cultural, racial, gendered processes that continue to have deleterious effects on groups and individuals in our society. As mental health practitioners and educators we are ethically bound to recognize our own implicit biases and subjectivities as these processes affect ALL of us.

The Center is now an integral and valued part of the New Washington School of Psychiatry.

MISSION

The Center sees its mission as promoting the well-being of ALL humans through experiential and didactic study of the range of differences and intersectionality among us to ensure greater equity and inclusion. Differences identified here include, but are not limited to, race, ethnicity, culture, national origin, gender, age, sexual orientation, ability, disability, religion, social class, and other factors that are likely to cause and perpetuate inequities.

THE CENTER IS COMMITTED TO:

  • Providing post graduate training and education for psychotherapists, NWSP faculty, and members of the community
  • Advocating for inclusion and equity in all NWSP programs through recruitment, scholarships, and mentorship
  • Participating in collaborative programs with other institutions and other NWSP programs
  • Promoting the recognition of cultural and multicultural factors in all human encounters
